Tyler, you’re quite right — the church would probably need to clarify Joseph Smith’s practice, specifically, whether it was inspired or not. Because if the church declares that there is polygamy in heaven, the answer is easy — Joseph was inspired. But if the church declares there is not polygamy in heaven, it becomes complicated to explain why Joseph would have revelation about marriage on earth which contradicts how marriage works in heaven. And all of the statements by general authorities speaking of polygamy in heaven would need to be explained. So yes, it is hard to imagine the church addressing this doctrinal issue without also issuing some opinion on Joseph’s polyandrous practices.
